5 Local Spots to Get a True, New York Bagel
Crispy on the outside, warm and gooey on the inside—a New York bagel is one carb-heavy snack that’s worth the cheat. Here are a few recs for where to indulge.
Bagel Boss, Boca Raton
The OG Bagel Boss was founded by a father-and-son duo on Long Island in 1975, the first 24-hour bagel shop on the island. It soon grew into a franchise that spread to areas like Nassau, Suffolk, New York City, and New Jersey. Bagel Boss was popular not only for its fresh bagels but for its “bagel of the month club” and signature Flagels—a delectably crispy, flat bagel. Now South Floridians can get their Flagels on at the new Bagel Boss that recently opened in Boca Raton. Stop in for bagels with all the toppings, Flagels, specialty coffee and tea drinks, breakfast sandwiches, and more. Fun fact: Kerri, the boss here at Flavor South Florida, got her start in the working world at a Bagel Boss in New York. Click here to watch a cute video of Kerri’s visit to the new Boca location, where she reminisces about her teenage years (and reveals a throwback photo!).
Bagel Boyz, Jupiter
Mike and Pat O’Brien have been serving up New York bagels to Jupiter locals for nearly 20 years. The former accountant and school teacher had fond memories of taking their children to a neighborhood bagel shop in Pennsylvania, where they used to live, every Sunday. Filled with nostalgia, they decided to open their own bagel spot here in Florida. In addition to bagels, the shop on Military Trail serves full breakfast meals like steak and eggs and French toast, lunch sandwiches like the turkey club and Philly cheesesteak. Bagel Boyz also offers catering.
H&H Bagels, West Palm Beach/Boca Raton/Palm Beach Gardens (Coming Soon)
If you’ve spent any time in NYC and aren’t bread-averse, you’ve surely stopped into H&H at some point. H&H is a bagel empire in New York, founded back in 1972. The shop became known for its traditional water bagel method, which has become synonymous with the New York bagel, and the shop has had its share of screen time on shows like Sex and the City and The Office. You can get a true New York bagel at franchises in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and, the upcoming Palm Beach Gardens location, plus egg sandwiches and tasty beverages.
Brooklyn Water Bagel, Various Locations
This place honors the traditional New York bagel on another level. They use a proprietary water system that replicates the natural water flowing through the Catskills to boil (then bake) the purest NY bagels possible. Stop in to any of the nearby Brooklyn Water Bagel locations, from Delray Beach to Vero Beach, for kettle-boiled bagels with various toppings, fresh-baked muffins and cookies, sandwiches, soups, and more.
Bagel Break, Stuart/Jensen Beach
Find kettle-boiled bagels baked in a stone oven at Bagel Break, with locations in Stuart and Jensen Beach. The New York–style bagels are the specialty here, of course, but they also serve full breakfasts, lunch sandwiches and subs, salads, and more.
