Pubbelly Hits Boca

It’s a sushi bar, a lively pub, and a killer happy hour spot. And now the Miami hot spot has a new location in Boca Raton!

Boca Raton recently welcomed Pubbelly Sushi to the neighborhood—and we were there for it. And let me tell you, the grand opening did not disappoint!

If you’ve never been to a Pubbelly before, honestly you’re missing out. The brand is well-known and beloved in South Florida for its “sushi pub” vibe. It’s not just a sushi restaurant, it’s a cool, neighborhood gastropub that just so happens to serve some of the best sushi around, among other dishes. Executive chef José Mendin infuses his food with a Latin twist, inspired by his Puerto Rican roots. Salmon tartare taquitos with avocado mousse, pico de gallo, and masago roe. Grilled octopus in a spicy lemongrass sauce. Pork belly kimchi fried rice. Tuna sashimi salad with daikon noodles and a spicy ponzu. (See where this is going? It’s HOT in here!)

They have all the rolls you’d expect from a sushi place—yellowtail, salmon avocado, etc.—and they’re all delicious. But we were partial to some of their special creations, like the butter krab roll with kanikama, ponzu, and clarified butter wrapped in goma soy paper. Tip: Save room for a few bites of the miso bread pudding: chocolate miso custard, brioche, banana, peanuts, and sesame. So good.

On the drinks side, they have sake aplenty, including a solid list of tasty sake-based cocktails like the Milky Way (Nigori sake, jinmai sake, lychee purée, and passionfruit boba). Plus other specialty cocktails, wines, bubbly, and Japanese beer.

The Boca location on Restaurant Row marks Pubbelly’s sixth location, joining existing hot spots in Miami and West Palm Beach. The new location has an outdoor patio, the perfect place for some sushi and a few drinks this summer. They also have some of the best happy hour deals in town pretty much all day long (12 to 6 p.m.).
